ii Preface I want to thank all people who have been supportive during my master study. Especially I thank my supervisor Joachim Weickert, and the people in his research group at Saarland University in Germany, where I stayed as a guest for most of the time. It has been a great pleasure to stay in your group. The great scientific atmosphere has brought up many new ideas. I further want to thank my main supervisor Xue-Cheng Tai for convincing me that image processing is such an interesting application of mathematics. I also would like to thank Tom Kavli from sintef IKT. Although I did not pursue the topic we planned, the applications we discussed have been an inspiration for the material in Chapter 4 of this thesis.
